Environment
The supra-regional Moerdijk port and industrial complex is intended for companies and industry with specific establishment conditions, such as industry with activities that cause an environmental nuisance, waterway-related activities and companies that require a large amount of space. The port and industrial complex is divided into a number of themed clusters, such that upon establishment, related companies can benefit from each other’s products and knowledge (Industrial Ecology).
Of the 30,000,000 mega joules of power generated annually on Moerdijk, 10% is now recycled. This concerns fossil fuels, steam, gas and electricity. The steam exchange is 3,500 tons annually, as is the water recycled. Under the umbrella of the Management and Co-ordination Group Moerdijk Environment and Safety (SCMVM), (the Moerdijk Industrial Complex Businesses Group (BIM) sits in this group, the Province of Noord-Brabant, the Municipality of Moerdijk and the District Water Board for the Brabant Delta and RWS) various projects are carried out in the areas of water, noise, use of space, etc. Findings are included as part of the “monitoring” project of the environmental situation of the Moerdijk port and industrial complex, in order to be able to report to the companies and surrounding area annually. The number of companies who wish to establish themselves on the port and industrial complex shall increase in the coming years. As a result of this, the environmental burden in the areas of noise, external safety, air quality, etc., will also increase. The Port Authority shall, as park manager, fulfil an important overall function here in relation to established companies, the authorities involved and the surrounding area.
